Our Story

mltech was founded in 1998 when Mike Lloyd recognised that pipework manufacture required an innovative solution to meet the requirement from the UK Oil and Gas industry to replace hotwork installation practices with safer, more efficient processes.

Taking advantage of new technology Mike developed a precision measurement system that revolutionised manufacturing processes to allow fabricators to produce accurate fit-first-time parts in the workshop. Not only eliminating the need for hotwork during fitting but also greatly improving accuracies, reducing on-site personnel requirements, and making pipework installation safer and quicker.

The pipework fabrication market has gone through many changes in the years since and mltech have remained at the cutting edge of development, creating benefits for our clients and so achieving de facto standard for pipework measurement requirements in the North Sea fabrication market.

With an ever growing worldwide client base we remain committed to bringing these benefits and developmental advances to the pipework industry in the hope that we can continue advancing pipework measurement practices.

Timeline

Meet the Team

Mike Lloyd

Mike is mltech’s founder and owner. He trained as a QS and later as a land surveyor in the early ’70s, working on contracts in Nigeria and Kuwait and at the beginning of North Sea Oil and Gas exploration in Scotland.

Mike was instrumental in developing innovative techniques such as the survey spike used with the first coaxial Total Stations – changing the way measurements could be captured.

He has worked on many challenging engineering projects in his career, including work on some of the deepest fixed offshore pipework structures in the world – developing creative solutions to complex problems including the management and control of fabrication dimensions on enormous structures.

Since 1989 he has been focused on offshore survey techniques to enable pipework to fit without field fit welding, developing the merCAD software and visual program solutions for industrial measurement and now the automet® system. He continues to develop innovative site survey solutions and pipework manufacture controls.

Jenny Scott

Jenny is mltech’s general manager responsible for day-to-day operations, coordinating customer service, and ensuring the business runs smoothly. She also looks after finance, business development, health and safety and administrative functions for the company.

Jenny has a 1st class BSc(Hons) in Building Surveying and was the recipient of the prestigious RICS Scotland Student Award during her studies.  She also participates in the Principally Women programme run by Scottish Enterprise for female leaders and founders.

Whether providing front line customer support or working behind the scenes, Jenny keeps everything running smoothly and efficiently and helps our clients get the very best results from our products and services.

Duncan Lloyd

Duncan is part of mltech’s customer support team, dealing with any questions our clients may have regarding software support, aftercare and hardware maintenance queries.

Duncan is responsible for providing IT support, survey instrument testing and servicing, and customer services and also delivers training to new users, teaching them the software’s use and applying new survey techniques.

Duncan always loved gaming and setup his first home network at the age of 15 so he could play games against his friends, since then he has been fascinated with networking and the process of creating scalable networks. With a BEng in Computer Network Management and Design from Robert Gordon University, Duncan has 16 years’ experience working in network integration and capacity planning in the IT sector.

Fergus Lloyd

Fergus is part of mltech’s customer support team, providing technical support and delivering training to new users.

Fergus has been with mltech from the beginning of his career, starting out as an apprenticeship surveyor.

He spent time working in fabrication workshops performing dimensional checks of spools before moving into on-site survey work, offshore and worldwide.

Fergus’ practical, real-world experience is invaluable in providing valuable training to new users.

Andy Tait

Andy is mltech’s lead developer, primarily responsible for the release and ongoing development of the automet® Fab software, along with the licensing system used in all of mltech’s products.

With a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from Robert Gordon University, Andy has over twenty years of software and hardware development experience.

Andy’s practical, real-world experience includes projects ranging from education asset management systems, audio playback equipment for DJs, and country-scale wireless internet authentication.
